Coconut Chanel

When the mini skirt appeared in fashion in the 60s, Miss Chanel was asked whether she approved of girls exposing their knees and thighs. Coco answered "Thighs, of course! But knees, never!".

I know it's not very funny, nor interesting, but that's all I had on my lunch plate today! See you soon guys! And HAPPY F***ING NEW YEAR. Enjoy the last days before the cataclysmic 2012! HAHAHAHA

Stanford University is really great

In 2010, the University ranked 4th in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. Stanford is well known for its academics in social sciences, technology / computer science, life sciences, biomedicine, humanities, natural sciences. The S Uni is one of the world's top 5 universities along with Tokyo, Harvard, Keio Universities and University of Pennsylvania.

Note that, students are really into fitness (California baby). You can see sexy men running on the campus (sweaty no T Shirt and some 200 IQ brassy blondes too).

A few Stanford alumni created some small companies such as Hewlett-Packard (William Hewlett and David Packard), Cisco Systems (Sandra Lerner and Leonard Bosack), NVIDIA, SGI, VMware, MIPS Technologies, Yahoo! (Chih-Yuan Yang and David Filo), Google (Sergei Brin and Lawrence Page), Wipro Technologies (Azim Premji), Nike, Gap (Doris Fisher) and Sun Microsystems.

Here is a treat for you ladies: The Stanford Men Swim team.

Sweet dreams ;-)

Paris is definitely the capital of Fashion

Yes, Chanel could have made it: all black, shiny, sexy, a bit provocative and intriguing.

After the Burqinis (Burqa+Bikini), you can find the Niqab (NiqaBitch) in Paris.
Apparently a few girls went walking with Niqabs in front of the Socialist Party (a.k.a extreme communists for Americans) Headquarters in Paris! They finished their walk in front of the Immigration Department! Sacre culot(te)!

Polyorchidism is the "incidence" of more than two testicles!

1-2-3... Maybe this is what Miss Spears was singing about? Anyways, today you've learned something much more rich and interesting. You can have 3, 4 or more testes. It is apparently a VERY RARE congenital disorder. Its most common form is triorchidism, that is to say one man has 3 testes! A man who as polyorchidism is called "polyorchid" (I am wondering now if this is the reason I love so much orchids!). Ah well, ladies and gents, Lady Nature is not always fair, isn't it?

Antarctica doesn't belong to any country

Yes, no country owns Antarctica. Why?
There are no permanent residents in Antarctica. Only researchers go there for a few months a year to conduct various studies.
On average, Antarctica is the coldest, driest, and windiest continent and has an annual precipitation of 200 mm (~8 inches) which makes it considered a desert. Its humidity level is lower than Gobi desert's!

90% of ice on Earth is in Antarctica and it also represents 70% of the fresh water.

Only cold resistant species survive the conditions there, such as penguins, mites, seals and many kinds of algae.

Expression "to get fired" was literally real long time ago

Apparently in the past, when a clan no longer wanted a member in it, they would burn down his/her house. This is where the expression "to get fired" originates from.
I didn't do a lot investigation on this fact... Feel free to confirm or deny it!

The fatality rate of jumping from the Golden Gate is approx. 98%

Apparently the Golden Gate Bridge (in San Francisco, California, USA, for dummies) is the most popular place to commit suicide. The deck is 75 meters (~250 feet) above the water which can provide a fall of approximately 4 seconds.
Those who jumped, hit the water at 122 km/h (~76 miles/h), which at this speed is similar to hitting concrete! So most jumpers don't die of drowning but of the impact they have on this concrete water (ha, ha!)
And those who survived the impact, usually drown or die of hypothermia.
There is no accurate number of suicides, but about 35 bodies in average are recovered each year.

However, there is hope: the crisis hotline (1-800-784-2433).

You can find more details on the Wikipedia article about the GG bridge: here.

Seducing a geek is an art

Here is a brief list of how to seduce a geek guy:

1- Wear a tee-shirt from XKCD
2- Know what 42 means
3- Tell him you like when you're just the 10 of you.
4- Never admit you use Windows (Mac is OK, Linux is better)
5- When you're about to tell your love, say "sudo love me" (it will never fail)
6- Don't say HTML is a programming language
7- Sing him Saint Seiya's song (even better when in Japanese)
8- Either be a super hot blond or mega ugly female. Inbetween won't captivate their attention.
9- Watch Battle Star Galactica
10- Play WOW or Pong

And seducing a Mac geek is a whole different story. Maybe in another post...

The Chicago-style pizza was invented in 1943

More precisely at the Uno pizzeria in Chicago.
This pizza was very popular during World War II because it could feed a lot people and it was not costing much to make it.
Chicago-style pizza has a buttery and heavy crust that could be up to 3'' tall (at the edges), a bit more of cheese than regular pizzas and A LOT chunky tomato sauce. The dough basically acts as a bowl.
Ingredients: usually the oil used for the dough, is olive oil. In the traditional version, mozzarella cheese is used. Then, generally, ham or Italian sausage with mushrooms and onions are added. All is topped with heavy chunky tomato purée.

From Wikipedia's article about Chicago-style pizza.

Genes can be interpreted

This Northern CA based company, 23 and Me is proposing to interpret your genes and help you to detect any potential (inheritable or not) diseases you may get in the future. The analysis is a bit pricey: $429, but if it can help to save lives... My BF wanted to offer me the kit for my B-Day and I did not like the idea of "Happy Birthday Honey, you have cancer!". Too creepy.
The company's headquarters are located in Mountain View, next to Google's ones. Google invested a couple of millions in 23 and Me, whose co-founder, Anne Wojcicki is just Sergey Brin's wife, Google's co-founder :)
I am sure they will have some promising genes combination for their descendants.

Silverfish bugs don't bite humans

The lepisma saccharina or the silverfish, fishmoth, carpet shark, or paramite, is a small wingless insect. These little creature's diet consist mainly in eating carbohydrates such as sugar or starches.

A silverfish is usually shiny grey and grows from 1/4'' to 1/2'' in size. While they don’t swim, their tail moves in a swishing fish-like manner.
They can live in large groups and a large infestation of silverfish in your house could cause a few material damages, especially on your books.
Silverfish bite through paper bags that hold sugar or flour... and Bon Appetit, bien sur!
The easiest way to get rid of silverfish is to remove their food source! A humid house with a lot of mold and mildew is the perfect habitat for these bugs.

42 is the answer

According to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, 42 is "the Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything."

42 is also the angle in degrees for which a rainbow appears.

In various religions, the number 42 is omnipresent. There are 42 gods and goddesses of Egypt personifying the principles of Ma'at (the Ancient Egyptian personification of physical and moral law, order, and truth.)
In the Kabalistic tradition, God created the Universe with number 42.
42 appears in many contexts in Christianity: there are 42 generations in the Gospel of Matthew's version of the Genealogy of Jesus. It is prophesied that for 42 months the Beast will hold dominion over the Earth (Revelation 13:5).
42 men of Beth-azmaveth were counted in the census of men of Israel upon return from exile (Ezra 2:24).
God sent bears to maul 42 of the youths who mocked Elisha for his baldness (2 Kings 2:23), etc, etc.

Blood pressure is not so hard to understand, but harder to control

Blood pressure is usually represented as two number ratio like this: 116/74 mm Hg.
You should read it as "116 over 74 millimeters of mercury".
The top number (systolic), the highest of the two numbers, measures the pressure in the arteries when the heart beats (contraction).
The bottom number (diastolic) measures the pressure in the arteries between heartbeats (resting between beats and refilling with blood).

The chart below, proposed by the American Heart Association represents pressure categories:

Blood Pressure | Systolic | | Diastolic
Category | mm Hg | | mm Hg
------------------------------------------------
Normal | <120 | and | <80
------------------------------------------------
Prehypertension | 120–139 | or | 80-89
------------------------------------------------
Hypertension | 140-159 | or | 90-99
Stage 1 | | |
------------------------------------------------
Hypertension | >160 | or | >100
Stage 2 | | |
------------------------------------------------
Hypertensive | >180 | or | >110
Crisis: emergency| | |
------------------------------------------------

What is a Hypertensive Crisis?

A hypertensive crisis exists when blood pressure reaches levels of 180 or higher for the systolic number OR 110 or higher for the diastolic number. High blood pressure is a chronic condition. The damages it causes to blood vessels and organs usually occurs over the years. However it happens that blood pressure rises quickly and consequently and it should be considered a medical emergency.

If you suspect of having a very high blood pressure, wait a couple of minutes and test it again to make sure the first reading was accurate. There is no safe duration for blood pressure to remain in high range. Do not wait to see if your pressure comes down on its own. Call 9-1-1 immediately for emergency medical assistance or go to the nearest hospital ASAP. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms listed below, don't drive yourself unless you have absolutely no other option.
- Severe headache
- Severe anxiety
- Shortness of breath
- Nosebleeds

Uncontrolled blood pressure can lead to various bad consequences, such as:
- Stroke
- Loss of consciousness
- Memory loss
- Heart attack
- Damage to the eyes and kidneys
- Blood vessel damage (A hypertensive crisis can cause blood vessels to become inflamed and potentially leak blood, making it difficult to maintain adequate blood circulation.)
- Organ damage caused by inadequate circulation
- Aortic dissection
- Angina (unstable chest pain)
- Fluid backup in the lungs
- Loss of kidney function

Conclusion: do sport (swim, bike and run), eat healthy (broccolis), sleep, and be nice to others.

A MacDonald's BigMac buger has about 540 calories

About 160 calories per dollar. Pretty good deal, when you know that it's 75 calories per dollar for a half pound of broccoli.
In US, an average normal person, with regular exercise needs about 2000 calories/day, that is to say about 12 dollars of BigMacs: 4 burgers in total or 26 dollars of broccoli: about 15 medium sized broccoli (~14oz each).

Mosquito is the most deadly animal

Mosquitoes are responsible for the most human deaths worldwide.
Apparently, each year, mosquitoes are estimated to transmit disease to more than 700 million people and at least 2 million die of these diseases.

While male mosquitoes feed on nectar and plant juices, the females need to obtain nutrients from fresh blood in order to produce eggs.
It's all woman's fault again!
Mosquito has a mouth that can pierce plant's, human's and animal's skin.

According to Wikipedia's article on mosquito, there are about 3,500 species in the world.
Female mosquitoes have sometimes a preference for some person over others due to the sweat smell. Because their favorite victims have good proportions of the carbon dioxide, octenol and other compounds that it makes their body odor so particular and... attractive! (This is the AXE effect).

Next iPad won't have wings

We all know that the iPad is nice product. However, here is a quick list showing all the missing or negative points.
- No multi-tasking (no music while browsing. However should come up in the next OS)
- No drag and drop file management, must use iTunes
- Long synchronization
- Single device (mac, PC...) association with your iPad
- No USB port. iPad will sync itself via USB but only when plugged in via its proprietary dock connector, that you need to purchase.
- Limited storage (16, 32, or 64GB)
- No SD slot
- No support of Adobe Flash
- No HDMI output (to get video out, you’ll need a proprietary dock to VGA adapter, limiting to VGA resolutions
- No full HD (no 1080p)
- No native widescreen (no 16:9)
- No camera
- No GPS for wifi only versions

On the other hand, iPad is a high quality finished product. It's a nice and light object proposing many great applications. The next version of the iPad will hopefully be more complete.

You can buy Burqinis online

A burqini or burkini is a swimsuit for women designed by Aheda Zanetti (company Ahiida). You can buy them online on Ahiida.com. Many kinds* of burqinis exist: for children, teenagers, adults, plus sizes...

In 2009, a woman in France was prevented from swimming in a public pool because she was wearing a burqini. This interdiction was due to a law that prohibits the use of various forms of swimwear in public pools.

And if you're too hot, you can always opt for micro bikinis on Smallest-bikini.com

*Many kinds: meaning same shape but different colors.

300 to 400 eggs will be ovulated during a woman's reproductive lifetime

During fetal life, about 6 million to 7 million eggs are produced. After that, no new egg will be produced.
Most of the eggs within the ovaries gradually die, until they are depleted at menopause. At birth, about 1 million eggs are left and at puberty, only about 300,000 remain. Of these, 300 to 400 will be ovulated during a woman's reproductive lifetime. Women, did you know that the eggs continue to degenerate during pregnancy, with the use of birth control pills, and in the presence or absence of regular menstrual cycles?
Clock is ticking...
